I meant to comment earlier, but.. it's off the mark to frame their lifestyle as abandoning society. They are very much involved in the community and in fact, probably more social than many. Everyone finds their own way in the world and the one 100r have chosen is absolutely not a "dead end" of any sort. Strange that such a framing ends up as the top-voted comment on this... Heck, I'd argue that they live better within society (and more socially-conscious) than the average person because they actually consider the ethics and externalities of their everyday existence, unlike the majority of us who consume and extract with nary a consideration for the rest of the planet or other life forms -- all the while giving back to anyone who is interested, via creative acts and an interminable philosophy of sharing and inclusion.
