Hyphenation isn’t the best for readability, which is especially important with moving text. (That’s also why there was so much leading, so it would be easy to see which line continued the one you’re looking at.) Many of the word combinations that were kept together rather than split up had much more impact together. Reading that the replicants were slave labor has more literary impact than them being slave

labor. Avoiding left-edge raggedness is critical for readability, but avoiding right-edge raggedness is only more important than disturbing meaning and readability when either a) the block of text needs to have strong visual integrity in the context of other elements (even column gutters or page edges in some cases,) or b) when space is critical. In this case they made the right decision. The left margins in the final text block were for emphasis. Even in a business letter wouldn’t be out-of-bounds, but in creative writing it’s der rigueur, and in on-screen movie text, things like that are nearly required.
